BMW describes the X5 as a Sport Activity Vehicle (SAV) rather than an SUV, to emphasize its on-road ability despite its size. Like the Lexus RX 300 and Mercedes M-Class, the X5 heralded the shift from truck-based body-on-frame SUVs to sedan-based crossovers that would come to fruition in the late 2000s.

One of today's rumors say that BMW will launch a new tri-turbo diesel engine which will equip a performance version of the BMW X5. The new BMW tri-turbo diesel engine is based on the current 6-cylinder unit and will develop around 350 hp. This means the BMW X5 Performance Diesel that will be powered by the new tri-turbo diesel engine all offer decent performance with a low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions level.Besides the new engine, the BMW X5 Performance Diesel will also be fitted with Start / Stop technology and a braking energy regeneration system.
The new BMW tri-turbo diesel engine will be available at first on the European market only, and will be gradually launched on the X6, the new 5 Series and the 7 Series.
